I knew this would surface eventually.

Interesting. My records show BC was ranked in the AJC in 1995, 1996, 1997, and 1998. And we beat Camden in 2000 and hung pretty good with Starr's Mill in 2001.

So more like 6 times every 15 years.

And we've been ranked in the state's highest classification a total of 24 times in BC history. So not just once.

never a team that good though. and nothing really to speak of since 2001 I think.

We couldn't hack it in AAAAA, so we dropped to AAA. Then we dropped to AA. We couldn't hack it in our AA region so we chose a weaker AAAAA region despite our athletic program having the most successful year in history.

As the AAAAA schools get bigger, the chance of repeating the glory years of the 90s becomes essentially nill. Like Snuffy said, Pat, this isn't the 90s anymore.

Also, we're gonna do whatever the SAV schools do. So I presume you're going to be mad when we drop to AAAA or AAA when they eventually go?

In my opinion, AA is best for the athletic program. I know you'd like to see the football teams of the late 90s - i would love to see them as well - I just don't think they're possible anymore. I hope you prove me wrong.

Barstool you are a dear friend but right now you sound a lot like Jimmy Carter in 1979: the good times are over, America will simply have to make do with less, we will all have to share in scarcity and be content being a second-rate power from now on, etc...

The "90's" officially ended when we decided to drop classifications in 2003. We had one bad year in 5A so we decided to take a shortcut to nowhere and become part of 3A. We did this to ourselves. The world didn't change; BC did.

Only one school's enrollment has changed since the 90's: BC's. Lowndes, Valdosta, Camden, Brookwood, etc. all have about the same enrollment they had in 2000 as they do now.

All BC needs is about 450-500 students and a handful of recruits and they can compete with anybody anywhere in any sport in 5A.

Marist proves this point: their enrollment is not much higher than ours (around 800 I think, so 400 boys) and I think we can all agree that Marist could pretty much hack it with any 5A school if they wanted to.

We just gotta dream a little bigger and set our sights a little higher, and I am most thankful that we are finally doing that again starting this season. And we get to beat the piss out of Savannah schools in the process as an added bonus.

4 months til Pius....

The good times have just arrived. We have the 2nd best AA athletic program in the state.

It's not impossible to compete in AAAAA football - I'm just not sure the program is in the right place to make it happen.

It comes down to a difference in preference. You prefer AAAAA, I prefer what we have accomplished this year. I don't think you would disagree with me that if our football team was in great shape right now, we wouldn't be making the move back to AAAAA. We're doing it because we can't compete in our AA region, not because we want to play the best.

Bryan, we must have different ideas of success. Our football team didn't make the playoffs and our baseball team had a losing record. All the soccer, wrestling, and tennis success is great, but I'm more worried about football, basketball and baseball. Basketball was great, but it doesn't make up for football and baseball. This year has not been a success for BC athletics.

I'm trying to underline the fact that it sucks we have to shift our entire athletic program to AAAAA because one sport needs easier competition. Yea it's the most important sport (our ideas of success are very similar, I assure you), but let's sac up and improve our football program. Agree or disagree with me about where we need to be, but the ideology behind our decisions worries me.

Glad we agree about what it means to be successful and how to get there obviously. I'm all for making our football better. I really do think that moving up to AAAAA and beating up on some recognizable Savannah schools helps our chances of getting the athletes from Savannah public middle schools.

I see your point about us focusing on just getting better bud. I agree it's more about the quality of our team than anything else. I guess if we made a deep run in AA or won the region in AAAAA, then we would get the athletes. But if moving up gives us a chance to be perceived as better in the eyes of others, then what's the harm in doing so?
