Put your money where your mouth is!

Fellow Cadets,

There are only two months left in the 2009-10 Annual Fund Campaign, aka "The Campaign for The 400." To my knowledge (and I have very good sources), only a few of the BMBS, OIA, PPB, OITO bloggers have contributed. We all like to talk the talk. Now it is time to walk the walk. Put your money where your mouth is. If you think BC is the best high school that a young man can attend, then make a contribution to perpetuate that legacy.

To make it easy for you, BC has made it possible to donate online. Here is the link: BC Online Giving.

The school needs your help now, more than ever. NO EXCUSES!

For Ol' BC,
CDT/COL Fleming, LET IV, RET

Will a donation go to the arts program?

A donation to the Annual Fund is an unrestricted gift that goes toward the general operating budget.

You'll have to come up with another excuse.

is there a way to tell if we've already donated this cycle?

Disclaimer: I have the utmost respect for Snuffy's job, what he is doing, and where he is coming from, so this is not on him by any means.

I don't mean to speak for everyone but what is frustrating for some alumni is when we open up the letters received and the first sentence is usually something to the effect of "the cost of educating a BC student has risen and is more expensive than ever, therefore we desperately need your donations, etc..." Then it just goes on for a few paragraphs explaining just how badly more money is needed.

Rarely, if anywhere, does the administration mention what it is actually doing to control/reduce these costs. The just throw out the initial figure as if to say "okay, that's it, it's really high, so we need you to donate."

This is what's so troubling: if we are given no assurance that anything is being done to control these skyrocketing expenses, how do we know they won't continue to skyrocket, and why even bother giving? Why throw money down a black hole? If the administration would just spend at least a paragraph detailing how and where they've cut back, I think some of us would be a little more willing to pitch in.

I can look it up. You have already given for this cycle. Thank you.

$200k has been cut from the financial aid budget. The Development budget has been cut by $30k. Both of these cuts were 50% cuts. I am not privy to many budget-related issues, but those are two cuts I know of off the top of my head.

You're gonna need another excuse. Keep 'em comin'!

Snuffy, where's the link to the new BC Alum Assc website?

I agree with Patrick that they ought to include a list of people who have already contributed when they send out those letters. Otherwise people would be confused. Oh wait...

See what I did there? I'm just saying it puts a bad taste in people's mouths.

The address of the newly redesigned alumni website is www.benedictinealumni.org.

Here is another budget cut for you. With the move to 5A next school year, BC will essentially eliminate the travel costs associated with the sports program.

Patrick said...

Certainly no complaints with that decision.

If the budget is being cut so much I just fail to see how tuition continues to radically outpace inflation year after year.

In 1997 a coke was a dollar and BC tuition was $5,000. In 2010 a coke is like 1.30 and BC tuition is $10,000. A 100% price increase because, what, a few priests retired? Ya'll keep making those cuts...

You asked for budget cuts, so I gave you budget cuts. The rise in tuition has been caused by declining enrollment from increased competition. That is no secret. Our enrollment was up this year for the first time in 6 years and we were one of the few private schools to experience an increase in enrollment.

I agree with the point you are trying to make: that the school has been managed poorly over the past 10+ years. However, that is changing.

Just answer me this one question. Why won't you give $50 to the Annual Fund? You love BC. You wear your BC hat. You come to games when you are in town. You sing the fight song.

And if not the Annual Fund, why not the GOAL Scholarship program, where you can make a donation to BC and get that money back in the form of a tax credit?

Patrick said...

Because I'm just not convinced that donating money to the school is actually going to make the school any better.

And it's also because I am cheap. But I might look into the GOAL thing because I at least trust Father Frank a lot more than Sonny.

Congrats on getting enrollment up.

Thank you for an honest response. Now, I will hound you about a GOAL donation.

What would make you more inclined to donate to the school? Give me some constructive criticism that I can pass along to our Advancement Office.
