It's warming up outside, the Masters is in a couple weeks, baseball is starting back up, and soon we'll all be at Tybee staring at high school girls and listening to music our parents and grandparents made out to.
Here are the rules:
1. Anyone (not just members) may nominate up to 5 beach music songs and place them in the comments to this post. Submissions are due by Sunday at noon.
2. A song may only be nominated once, so make sure you check previous nominations before submitting your own.
3. Comments that try to gay it up by being sarcastic and making fun of this process by nominating songs that are obviously not of the beach music genre will be deleted.
4. We will then vote on the songs by breaking them up in a way that prevents people from merely voting for themselves each time. I haven't really thought about how I'm going to do that yet but I'll figure out something. Maybe we'll do a playoff system. It ultimately boils down to how many submissions we get.
5. The person who nominates the highest-scoring songs wins a free slushie at Tybee Tyme. Below is the point schedule:
1st place song - 25 points
2nd place song - 20 points
3rd place - 15 points
4th place - 10 points
5th place - 5 points

Double Shot (of my Baby's Love) - The Swinging Medallions
The Horse/Love is Alright - Cliff Nobles & Co.
Up on the Roof - The Drifters
What Kind of Fool (Do You Think I Am) - The Tams
39-21-40 Shape - The Showmen
Backfield in Motion- Mel and Time
Double Shot- The Swinging Medallions
Myrtle Beach Days- The Fantastic Shakers
Baby Let Me Bang Your Box- Doug Clark and The Hot Nuts (really, any Doug Clark song belongs here...)
I Got the Fever- Billy Scott and the Georgia Prophets
Damn- Since Double Shot was clearly already taken, I'll replace it with:
Give Me Just a Little More Time- Chairmen of the Board
Not sure all of these would be considered "Beach Music" songs, but irregardless (?) here is my list.
Build me up Buttercup -- The Foundations
Surfin' USA -- Beach Boys
In the Summertime -- Mungo Jerry
Dancin' in the Moonlight -- King Harvest
Moondance -- Van Morrison
I love Beach Music, but I am completely clueless as to artists, song titles, etc.
Great contest idea though.
There is no contest. Double Shot will win in a landslide.
The only one of Shane's that remotely qualifies is Build Me Up Buttercup. The Foundations weren't even American but their sound definitely catered to beach music fans, so they're okay.
The rest are just "oldies" and have nothing to do with the genre. You can make a case for Van Morrison, but only if it's Brown-Eyed Girl.
I Love Beach Music - The Embers
Under the Boardwalk - The Drifters
Stay - The Chantels? (or Maurice Williams, not sure of the orginal)
Ocean Boulevard - Band of Oz
Summertimes Calling Me - The Catalinas
OK - I know a couple of these are more on the contemporary side - but you just said "beach music" and didn't qualify an era - so here I go:
Summer in the City - the Lovin' Spoonful
Good Vibrations - The Beach Boys
Love Shack - B52's
Steal My Sunshine - Len
In no particular order:
Margaritaville by Jimmy Buffet (overplayed, I know)
Escape (The Pina Colada Song) by Rupert Holmes
Twistin the Night Away by Sam Cooke
Having a Party by Sam Cooke
I'm So Young by the Beach Boys
None of TGP's qualify. Jesus, some of ya'll really are just plain clueless. Anyone who considers the Beach Boys to be "beach music" is obviously not at all familiar with the term. Google it or go to the wikipedia site if you need help.
Pat,
Burn me a disk, bro!
The Tams - be young, be foolish, be happy
Chairman of the Board - carolina girls
Temptations:
The way you do the things you do
Aint to Proud to Beg
Just my imagination
If Dancin in the Moonlight does not qualify as Beach Music, then neither does Double Shot.
My all time favorite is "Give me just a little more time." but, here you go.
1. "With this Ring"- The Platters
2. "Brandy, you're a fine girl" The Sailors
3. "Tears of a Clown" Smokey
4. "Another Saturday Night" Sam Cooke
5. "Cupid" Sam Cooke
Might want to change the name of the blog to "Not Necessarily Beach Music...or What is Beach Music?....and Boat Shoes"
