Pat,

The gorilla is playing the drums on Phil Collins' hit "In the Air Tonight."

This song was the first single from Phil Collins as a solo artist. It appeared on his 1981 album, Face Value. The song increased in popularity through the 80's. It was played almost in its entirety on the pilot episode of Miami Vice.

Urban legend surround this song. They all consist of some kind of story where Phil Collins sees someone drowning but doesn't do anything, or witnesses a crime and does nothing. In 1999 on VH1's "Classic Albums," Collins put the rumors to rest by saying that the lyrics were improvised and fit the mood of the song as well as the anger of his divorce at the time.

Interestingly enough, no one actually played drums on the original track. The beats were recorded with a Roland CR-78 drum machine. This, to me, makes this advertisement even more comical and entertaining.

Also Pat,

The gorilla is the largest of the living primates. It is a ground-dwelling omnivore that inhabits the forests of Africa. Gorillas are divided into two species and (still under debate as of 2007) either four or five subspecies. Its DNA is 97%–98% identical to that of a human,[3][4] and is the next closest living relative to humans after the two chimpanzee species.

Gorillas move around by knuckle-walking. Adult males range in height from 165-175 cm (5 ft 5 in – 5 ft 9 in), and in weight from 140–200 kg (310–440 lb). Adult females are often half the size of a silverback, averaging about 140 cm (4 ft 7 in) tall and 100 kg (220 lb). Occasionally, a silverback of over 183 cm (6 ft) and 225 kg (500 lb) has been recorded in the wild. However, obese gorillas in captivity have reached a weight of 270 kg (600 lb).

Gorillas have a facial structure which is described as mandibular prognathism, that is, their mandible protrudes farther out than the maxilla.

A drum is a musical instrument in the percussion group that can be large, technically classified as a membranophone. Drums consist of at least one membrane, called a drumhead or drum skin, that is stretched over a shell and struck, either directly with parts of a player's body, or with some sort of implement such as a drumstick, to produce sound.

Drums are the world's oldest and most ubiquitous musical instruments, and the basic design has remained virtually unchanged for thousands of years. Most drums are called "untuned instruments" because they have no definite pitch, with the exception of a few such as timpani. Drums, however, are being tuned to lower or uppen the pitch of the drum, though this can be highly difficult and requires a lot of knowledge on the sound production of a drum.

Often, several drums are arranged together to create a drum set that can be played by a musician.
