Forum: 2nd Annual Man of the Year Contest

I want feedback from everyone:

- First, should we even do this at all? I don't think it's worth doing unless there are at least 4 or 5 nominees. Last year was perfect, but I get the feeling this year it will simply be just 1 or 2 people nominating while everyone else sits back and tries to act "cool" or "busy."

- Second, if we do it, should we allow previous nominees to be renominated or should it be like the Grammies or Academy Awards where each year is a different year w/ different people? There are pluses and minuses on both sides here.

- Third, voting. Joe, you mentioned you wanted American Idol-style voting. Not being an avid follower of that show, I don't know what that means. But I guess what it boils down to whether we allow unlimited voting per computer or a one-man, one-vote system. I have a feeling that if we allow unlimited voting then Ron Paul will somehow end up being Man of the Year, and we don't want that to happen. Again, let me know what ya'll think.

Pat, all good questions. I'll address them in order.

1. The Man of the Year nomination and voting process generates interest, traffic, and activity on this blog at a time when not too much else is going on. The process and subsequent award presentation, if you will, couples well with the yearly "Pass In Review." It got a great response last year, and I think it will again.

2. I believe the candidates who are up for consideration must have lived their lives and conducted their business in accordance with the spirit and ideals of the blog writers and readers. The man of the year must represent us. That being said, I don't believe nomination one year should keep you out the next.

3. When I said "American Idol style," what I meant was to allow unlimited voting. This is merely a suggestion, but I think it would be good for the blog and the candidates. Keep in mind, one can only win if they are nominated.

As for nominations themselves: I am not opposed to funny nominations because, let's be honest, if we take this too seriously, no one will have any fun with it. The Burger King was kind of funny and, if I hadn't nominated Chris, it would have been Barbaro.

Also, I don't remember if we did a Miss BMBS E-Pageant, but that could be great.

Possible candidates:
Ann Coulter
the Filly that won the Preakness
Kelly Clarkson
Allie (AKA Naughty Pants, bartender at Rooftop)

The list could go on.

Keeping in mind that the award is titled "Man of the Year" I think we should nominate people based on their 2007 resume. This is not a lifetime achievement award, although last year's voting may have reflected that sentiment.

That being said, nominations should be open to anyone, even if they were nominated the previous year.

I do not like the unlimited voting idea. I feel that it would taint the legitimacy of this award. American Idol does that because they want to give the viewers what they want. BMBS was not created to draw ratings.

I really like Snuffy's idea that it should be based only on the man's 2007 performance. But how do you keep people from voting more than once?

Ryan - easily, there are polls that will limit you to 1 vote based on your IP address. While in theory someone could vote twice using two different computers, I'm not really worried about this and there's no way to prevent it anyway.

Now I just have to think of a nominee...damn this is going to be tough.
